Canon & Essence Update—

§ canon update.

Want to canon update your character? No problem. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

What happens. When a character is updated, they will have to leave the Realm of Stories to return to their own. This could be voluntary, such as during a break, or a random disappearance, such as in the middle of a campaign. At that point, it can be assumed that their world has cleared the threats at that time and will essentially resume its original timeline as if none of it happened until the Story Eater returns for the new canon point.
Time lapse. The Realm of Stories functions on its own sense of time (which is like zero), so a month in the character's world could be three days in the Realm or vice versa.
Change essence optional. It's possible to change a character's essence if you want, otherwise they will have the same one again. They'll keep all abilities and anything else they learned unless you want to change things.
Keep memories. All memories of their time in the Realm will return. They can also vaguely remember their time in the Realm while back in their world, but that's up to the player (it can be played off as a dream if trying to work it in as real experience would be too complicated).
Waiting period. There's a wait period of two weeks for any new material installments before a character can be updated, and spoilers should be marked.
Time gone. How long a characters goes out for the update can be from three days to a week. If you need more time, such as working the update as a long hiatus, that can be arranged.

§ essence update.

Need to change your character's essence? That's definitely doable, but here are a few things to keep in mind:

Legitimate reason for change. We want our players to carefully consider the essence their character will be having from the start as it's supposed to be a part of the character's growth into the setting. But we do realize that even careful planning doesn't always pan out, so if it turns out that the choice just doesn't fit, then it's definitely A-OK to change the essence out.
Two times max per cycle. Since we don't want characters to randomly go through essences like candy, we have a two time limitation per cycle.
How it works in-game. For a character to have their essence changed out in-game, they won't have to do anything at all. The Storyteller will be able to sense any mismatch or frustration through the journal, or even the essence itself might decide that they chose the wrong vessel to inhabit. Regardless, the character will find themselves suddenly engulfed in a ribbon of white letters and papers. When it clears, they will have undergone a ~~magical girl~~ transformation and find themselves with their essence, completely with change of wardrobe.
Relearning abilities. Except for any basic skills that weren't unique to the previous essence, all special abilities are unlearned and the character will have relearn any that could potentially carry over. Good news is that they at least still have knowledge about their skills and it will be a lot faster, even same day depending on how similar they were. Example, if a character learned to cast ice with the previous essence, they may be able to regain that ability if their new essence allows it. Otherwise, it's back to square one. (Think of it like changing job classes in JRPGs.)
Quirks reset. Obviously any personality quirks from the previous essence will no longer be in play, but it can be replaced with any quirks from the new essence. The character may feel lingering effects of the previous quirk, but at this point it would be more of a habit rather than just because of the essence.
Housing change optional. Characters do not have to move to a new home if they are comfortable in their current lodgings. But if they would like to try somewhere else, then their keys will change to lead them to their next potential home. If they decide after checking it out they don't want it, then the keys will revert back to their original form and remain that way.
Workshop optional. Using the Workshop isn't mandatory, but it is suggested if you're uncertain about what new essence to choose or if you want second opinions. So feel free to use it!

Essence: The Little Mermaid
Updated Background: Throughout Kingdom Hearts 3 Roxas is mostly absent, though part of Sora's quest involves somehow bringing Roxas back from his heart. The biggest problem comes from what to do with Roxas's heart; even if they manage to free Roxas from Sora's heart, there's no vessel for Roxas's heart to go into. Sora and Ienzo work out that if they had a replica, then it's possible it could be used as a vessel for Roxas's heart. This plan hits a standstill since Vexen is absent, but they later receive one from Demyx, who delivers it to Ienzo after Vexen makes it in secret.

During the battle in the Keyblade Graveyard, Saix and Xemnas move in to attack Sora and Lea, who were also in battle with Xion (who had been forcibly recruited by the new Organization XIII). After Xion's heart transfers from Sora's to her own Replica body, both the danger present and the connection Roxas had with Xion and Lea is enough to call Roxas's heart from Sora's heart, which then transfers into the waiting Replica body and intercepts the attack from Xemnas. He explains how he used the same method Master Xehanort used to allow the new Organization XIII to return (namely, using Replicas to house the hearts of the Organization XIII members he planned to use for his plan) and that he owed his return to many, and how he owed his return to many. He fights alongside Sora and Xion after Xemnas flees, and once Saix is stopped he, Xion, and Lea have a tearful reunion together. Later on, Roxas and the others go to confront Master Xehanort, and after his defeat by Sora's hand helps to seal Kingdom Hearts.

With the battle over, Roxas returns to Twilight Town with Xion and Lea, and the three are seen not only enjoying sea salt ice cream together atop the Clock Tower, but are also joined by Hayner, Pence, Olette, and Isa (who had been recompleted after his defeat as Saix and brought into the group). Later on, when Riku arrives in the Gummi Ship, Roxas and the others travel to Destiny Islands to celebrate their victory on the beach. They all celebrate before turning to watch Sora and Kairi together, before Sora vanishes away.

Updated Personality: Roxas's personality is more or less the same as it was before he left.

Any other updates: Roxas's heart is inside of a Replica vessel, so the argument could be made that he is now technically a Replica. However, Vexen has confirmed that his latest batch of Replicas, of which Roxas's Replica body is from, is able to meld with a heart so well and is so lifelike that the Replica can be considered "human in every way". As such, though his heart is in a Replica vessel, he could basically be considered a human.

~~Also his hair is a little darker now I guess?? lmao~~

Questions/Other: If it's cool I would like him to hop onto his canon update when Sora officially enters the game and then come back a few days later (so probably the 12th-15th or 16th)

Essence: Sweet Porridge Girl
Updated Background: Kotori has been cooking more with the Inuzukas and getting to know them better. Highlights include making boxed lunches for Golden Week, only for her mom to cancel and the Inuzukas to drive back to eat with her, helping Kouhei cook for Tsumugi when the little girl has a cold, meeting Kouhei's friend Yagi and learning to make donuts, and recreating squid and taro for Tsumugi.
Updated Personality: Slowly Kotori's been opening up more to the Inuzukas and beginning to care about them. Having them come back to eat with her after her mom cancelled and the rain ruined the Inuzukas' picnic plans means a lot to her, turning what would have been a crummy day into a really nice one. In exchange, she's beginning to have more investment in Kouhei and Tsumugi outside of cooking, encouraging the two of them to bond more and striving to improve her own cooking skills despite her nerves. It's when Tsumugi is sick that she realizes the depth of her feelings for the both of them: she comes over (in disguise...) to bring Kouhei ingredients for a sick day meal- complete with components for homemade dashi instead of instant- asks to be Tsumugi's friend (only to be told they already ARE friends, silly), and realizes that she might just have a crush on her teacher. Oh boy.
Any other updates: Kotori has a handful of new recipes under her belt, a good portion of which can be made with the donabe.

Questions/Other: Just noting this won't happen until after The Little Mermaid arc, and then gonna be slightly back-dating her return.

Canon: DuckTales (2017)

Essence: Icarus
Updated Background: Della has gone on new adventures with her freshly-reunited family, and learned more about what it means to be a mother. She (sorta...?) taught Launchpad how to fly properly, she bonded with her boys and Webby, and went to great lengths to contact the best friend she'd made on the Moon. She was given the scare of a lifetime when she watched most of her family blink out of time in a "time storm," she helped save the day from invaders from the Moon, (initially wanting nothing more than to stay away from the danger so her family would be safe, but Louie helped her understand that with bad turns of event come good ones) and she finally reunited with her twin brother.
Updated Personality: While Della will be largely the same, she has matured a small amount. Mostly, she's grown as a mother, specifically. She knows that she can't just be a friend to her children, now, but needs to care for them entirely, even if this means being stern with them at times.
Any other updates: None!

Questions/Other: This will happen a few days into December in real-time, backdated to late November in the game, (if possible,) since I want to wrap up her existing threads first, or at least get an idea of where major ones are going!

Updated Background: More cooking with the Inuzukas and school, with Shinobu and Inuzuka-sensei’s friend Yagi even helping out from time to time. The most important developments include overcoming her fear of knives, rebuilding her bonds with both her parents, learning it’s okay for her to view the Inuzukas as special people, and realizing what she wants to do after school: study to take over the restaurant someday.
Updated Personality: While Kotori is still shy and prone to anxiousness, and while she still LOVES food, she’s also grown a lot in the past two years. She’s grown a little more open about expressing her emotions, positive or negative, and she’s grown more competent in her cooking skills, even taking a leadership role at the school festival’s crepe stand. Her biggest accomplishment of all, though, is finally overcoming her fear of handling knives, in order to help Inuzuka-sensei and Tsumugi overcome a similar incident of their own.
Any other updates: Again, Kotori has explored a lot more recipes, many of which can be made with the donabe. In addition, she can actually use a knife now! Her skill level is still novice, but it’s slowly becoming more solid.

Questions/Other: Why does Kotori’s outfit change four times in the same scene in Chapter 39...?

Updated Abilities and Quirks: No quirk as Fox's emphasis on "taming" is basically a way to teach the prince on making and keeping relationships/friendship with others aka Social Links lol the taming process was actually similar to leveling up in P3. So he technically already has the quirk lmao. Will constantly have fox ears, fangs, and a tail. Shapeshifting into said fox and due to his (initial) untamed nature, the ability to always get out of situations.
Carry Overs: No carry overs.
Any other updates: Clothes will change to French fashion circa 1940s as the book was published 1943.

Questions/Other: Nope, thank you!

We have a quick question regarding Minato's ability to "always get out of situations." Could you elaborate a little more on what kind of ability this is? For example, is it for all disadvantageous situations or is it limited to certain degree of difficult or threat? We're also wondering if this is an actual power such as able to disappear or some other means of escape, or if it's more related to a natural skill such as increased wit to outsmart those involved or able to quickly spot an escape route. Or a mix of above (which is also possible).

No problem, sorry about that, I should have realized that was super vague. It would be more of a natural skill, able to quickly spot an escape route as in the story, the fox was just a normal fox (aside from being able to talk to the prince, anyway). I would say it's limited to a certain degree of difficulty or threat but perhaps it can grow to all disadvantageous situations as he grows stronger.

Updated Abilities and Quirks:
Abilities

Size Changing: Being able to grow or shrink in size, via eating comfits (candies) kept in a tin in his pocket. At first he'll only be able to reduce to about six inches or grow to about eight feet, but future upgrades will increase the limit accordingly, as well as how many candies he has on hand.

Vorpal Sword: A bladed weapon to be summoned, which can only be used to harm Story Eater foes. This weapon does not scale with his size changing.

Floating: Falling with style.

Animal Speech: ~~Squeakity squeak squeaken~~ The ability to talk to different animals and interpret their speech.

Creativity Creation: Being able to imagine small things or creatures into being for a short period of time. This will increase in both size, complexity, and length of time as the ability upgrades.

He'll receive no quirk from this change ~~if Gobo gets any MORE curious he's gonna wind up killing himself...~~
Carry Overs: Tunnels: Being able to create and manage tunnels and bolt holes to different places.
Any other updates: His yellow/pink shirt is going to change to a blue/white one instead, and his scarf will be black instead of red.

Gobo's Uncle Traveling Matt also was given several, which is notable because it allowed the main Fraggles to interact, via voice, with several (famous) "Silly Creatures" in "Outer Space" - celebrity names will be filed off, of course. The episodes focused on music and a sense of togetherness and fun between Silly Creatures and Fraggles.

(I think Winnie-the-Pooh, working as a support role/healing Essence and being a bear of very little brain and Christopher Robin's loyal, loving best friend, is a better fit for Wembley than Ferdinand!)
Updated Abilities and Quirks:
-Summoning Honey Pot Grenades: Standard Honey Pots spread healing energy through the immediate area, or can be consumed for greater healing impact. Other varieties include explosive pots of fireweed honey, sleep-inducing lavender honey, or sunflower honey that lights up the surroundings with a lingering flash - with more to come as he advances.
-Full-Size Honey Pot: Also a summon, and pours out a sticky honey to trap things.
-Summoning a Balloon: For floating purposes!
-Quirk: Craving sweet treats
(He will likely develop further powers as he advances through Campaigns, including a bee outfit that gives him controlled flight instead of floating.)
Carry Overs: None
Any other updates: He'll get a "weapon" - a pop gun that starts off as simply a rifle with a cork on a string, but as he updates, it'll become a more useful distraction.

Questions/Other: Does it count as cheating if I'm copying myself? But seriously, just wanted to get Wembley in a more support role with a more workable power set that I wouldn't... Forget things about half the time.

He leaves Great Britain, and confronts Gregson about the Professor case on the S.S Bara Block. He nearly kills him, but manages to only hit the detective's trunk, chipping the tip of his sword, Karma. He then leaves the ship once it docks in France and spends the night at a nearby inn.
Updated Personality: He's just very angry and out for revenge.
Any other updates: Uhh nothing really.

Questions/Other: He's going home after the Alice campaign.

Updated Abilities and Quirks: Junpei gains the ability to ride on horseback, shooting a bow and able to talk to all animals.
His new quirk is bad luck followed by good- now he'll be prone to have bad luck-- falling down, finding the food he wanted sold out, etc. But then good look has a chance of happening to him-- when he falls down, he finds money, finds food he likes even more than the one he wanted. If he is with the frog Princess however, the good luck is REALLY good.
Carry Overs: Uh, he can talk to bears still? But now it's expanded to all animals.
Any other updates: His clothing is more based on Russian Royalty, Like in this film!
